Postcard Friendship Friday Old Letters

Instead of postcards I am sharing two old letters. I will give more details about the first one. It is written by Olivia Dollar on Dec 28, 1864 in Alton Illinois to Jennifer Nichols in Wapello Iowa. It is a long newsy letter but a little hard to read. I received from my Dad a box of letters written to several members of the Nichols family over the years. They were written from the 1860's to the early 1900s. So if I ever tackle these 25 plus letters I can learn some of the family history. I try reading them but give up. Beautiful writing in sepia color ink. The second letter is too faded to read. For other postcards for PFF go to Maries blog http://www.cpaphilblog.com/

What pretty paper! Can you imagine having a last name like Dollar? You certainly wouldn't be able to name your boy George! So where are you Judy my RV ing pal? (Hugs)

How absolutely beautiful. Old letters are such treasures in more ways than one. I once found a letter to the "girl back home" from a young man who stayed in the rooms we remodeled in our 100+ year home. He'd never had the chance to send it--the letter fell down behind the backboard.

I'm with Marie, how fun that this person's last name is "Dollar!"

Just fascinating! I'll be back to visit to hear more!

I am home not RVing away. And sorting through stuff trying to organize sewing supplies, postcards, old books and letters. I just read them instead of working.

Ohhhhh such Lovely paper... How wonderful that you have so many "family" letters... but such a shame that they're difficult to read... I think if I had letters like that, I'd frame them to hang on the wall going up the stairs...
Thanks for sharing, and...
Happy May Day!

I would be pouring over these with magnifying glasses and my Hello Kitty CSI kit for sure!

It's great that those letters were saved. Quite often stories and information die out with the passing of family members.

Hope your weekend is beautiful

How I love old letters. I save a lot of my letters from friends, and once in a while I re-read them and marvel at how times have changed for us all. I especially love old letters since email has taken so much letter writing away. I also love that vintage embroidered quilt block on your last post! blessings,Kathleen

Judy, you can use your scanner to make the handwriting in faded letters more legible. Just play with the contrast, or make them into negative images, then make *that* darker, then hit make them positive again. The ink will be much darker (in the image) if you do this.

Never thought of using old envelopes for Postcard Friday! Thanks!
