What happened to Sunny California?

This part of Central California gets some snow but 7 inches is a little more then usual and it is cold and refusing to melt.  The highway that goes by is clear and so is the property on the other side as they get the sun.  We are in a hole and mostly shade and it is 55 high about 25 at night so it is slow to melt.  The cats hate it, the dog is not thrilled with it and I hate it too.  Thank goodness we have one 4 wheel drive truck that will get us out of our driveway.  But the fireplace is going, spaghetti for dinner so I guess things are not too bad.

Why we Buy Postcards.

What 2 interests draw collectors in buying postcards?

1.  Interest in one's locality.  Students of local history  discover that a view card of their favorite town can give them a fuller and more accurate picture of what life was like 60 or 70 years.

2. Social History - which falls into many forms, Military, costume, transport, car enthusiasts, humor.

The picture postcard offers scope to specialists in many fields.   am sure there are more then 2 reasons to buy a postcard.  Why do you buy postcards?

Yosemite Postcards, Outdoor campfire on Quilted Runner- embroidered

I am working on a table runner to put in our RV, I am going to embroider different camping scenes on 4 or 5 blocks.  Here is the campfire yet to be finished.
Here is part of the runner with decorative squares, (notice tent at bottom) with more plain ones.  I displayed 3 Yosemite National Park Postcards (California). The additional tent is an old well used coaster.

Little Chief Pancho St Louis Zoo Chimpanzee Show 1950 Postcard

Pancho (Little Chief), two and a half years old, is one of the rising young stars  of the St. Louis Zoo's Chimpanzee Show.  His serious mien, pride in his colorful costume and a walk all his own already have made him a favorite with audiences.  The Chimpanzee Show, which opens in May and continues through October is one of three free animal shows at the St. Louis Zoo.

Greetings from St. Cloud Minnesota Postcard Canoeing and Camping

Sometimes I think these old postcards are generic.  It looks like the publishers printed in St. Cloud after the words Greetings from....These camping photos could be anywhere up in Minnesota or Wisconsin or....But they are neat pictures of fun family camping.  Why was my last RVing experience (not quite rustic camping) not too ideal, desert winds (well what did I expect being 100 miles from Death Valley) flies, dust etc.  But we had fun in Lone Pine with wonderful views of Mt Whitney and sleeping well to the wind blowing through the Aspen tree.  Now for cooler weather and more camping.

Weekend news and shared postcards

Still quite warm in Central California but the evenings are cooling off nicely.  The smoke has let up from the Rim Fire.  It has been a smokey summer as we have had smoke from 3 fires.  I am not complaining about the warm weather as it makes it nice for sitting outside in the early morning and evening.  Today I look forward to going to a Birthday Party for a friend who turns 80.  We both have spent hours crafting together.  She does more then I do, since she still does the craft shows in the Fall and Winter.  A few postcards below from my stash!!

Balloon Festival this weekend in Reno Nevada

Had a great week here in Reno but had to leave before most of the balloons take to the sky tomorrow the 7th.  But we saw a preview of some balloons as some businesses near Reno on Thursday put their balloons into the sky.  Quite a site.  This one just landed.

Taksim Maydami (Square) Istanbul Turkey - Vintage Postcard

When I visited this square in Istanbul it looked much like this, although I do not know the age of this postcard.  (I was there in 1967)I found online on Wikipedia a modern picture of Taksim Square and it looked much different.  It also stated that the photo was taken from Burger King.  Now that is a change.

Maple Leaf Frame of couple on RPPC

Photography was very popular in the early 1900's and personal postcards were popular.  The more unique the better.  Using a stencil type mat and framing a photo was one idea this photographer had.  Here a maple leaf encloses this man and woman.

Odds and Ends - Collectibles

Vintage Finger Puppets

Miniature size cardboard Food Props

I think those drivers on lower right hand corner are wondering is this load too heavy!

I am a little behind in writing on my blog.  Busy with a lot going on.  Now it is the
water heater which needs some parts this morning. Sure hope we do not have to call the plumber.  It feels like August, still warm to hot days but the nights are a little cooler.
